Magdalen. Lying before rocky scenery and reading in a book. The hair open, one breast denuded. The book supported by a skull. Between the teeth of this the ear of some grass as symbol of hope. Christian  Lebrecht  Vogel

1759 Dresden 1816

The Brothers. The two sons of the artist – one the later Royal Saxon Court Painter Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein – sitting in a niche of the house and reading in a picture-spelling-book. Steel engraving by William French (c. 1815 – East Grinstead 1898). C. 1840. 15.1 x 16,8 cm.

Vogel’s presumably most famous painting, worked during the years in Wildenfels whereto he was appointed by Count Solms in 1780. Painted in several versions the one here most likely engraved after the latest which the King of Saxony purchased for the Gallery in Dresden.

Main work of  Chisholm  (Thieme-Becker) of 1837. – Bathing scenes of this kind are quite rare.
