The  AHA!  Event  of  the  Month

Summertime  –  Travelling  Season

A set of European state and provincial maps by Friedrich Wilhelm  Streit  (died 1839 as retired Royal Prussian Major) in steel engraving of several engravers colored in outline after – mostly – Streit’s own drawings, those of his sons, W. v. Möllendorf and occasionally others in portrait and oblong formats of ca. 21-23 x 27.5-29 cm at Natorff & Co., Berlin. 1833/37. Besides of some partial maps intended as a whole inscribed throughout and with the signatures of Streit and, if applicable, others in the plates, those of the engravers only in few cases though.

The value of these maps based on them being worked like general maps with their multitude of symbols as, generally,

natural + “artificial” streets, (fast) postal routes + their stations ,

shipping , harbours + anchor  places ,

channels , dams , crossings ,

frequently (arch) episcopal sees , universities + highschools , isolated freemasonry lodges , stud farms , forester’s houses + forest superintendent offices .

Friedrich Wilhelm Streit, Transylvania

As relatively young maps they round off cartographically. Of additional charme for the collector that they are from the early days of modern surveying which was basically a matter of the second half of the 19th century. One of the leading pioneers was Streit whose at least 249-sheet map “Charte von Teutschland” published since 1807 as the first all-German general map forms the century edition of an atlas of Germany par excellence. – The scales of the maps here differing. – Partly not absolutely fresh. – Titles in German.
