Jean Antoine de Peters

1725 Cologne 1795

“ Painter, draughtsman, miniaturist, etcher, collector … goes to Paris about 1744 and settles there; closer contact with Johann Georg Wille who … supports him decisively … owns in the 1760s and 70s a considerable art collection i.a. with works by Boucher, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens, Adriaen van Ostade, David Teniers (1610) and Antoine Watteau … In P’s own works the realistic characteristics of the Dutch and Flemish enter into interesting conjunctions with the gallant court art, especially with the genre pictures. Early involvement with classicism and admiration for Jacques-Louis David … P. was an intermediary between the French art sphere and German artists of whom he accomodates e.g. Adrian Zingg and Ferdinand Kobell during their stays in Paris ”
