Need  of  Reform  with  the  Execution  of  Sentence

Hogarth, William (1697 London 1764). Bambridge on Trial for Murder by a Committee of the House of Commons. The turnkey Bambridge of the debtor’s prison in the Fleet

in  the  hearing  on  the  spot .

Engraving by Thomas Cook (c. 1744 – London 1818). Inscribed: Engraved by T. Cook from an Original Painting by Wm. Hogarth in the Possession of Mr. Ray. / Published June 1st. 1803, by G. & J. Robinson, Paternoster Row, London., otherwise as above. 44.2 x 55.5 cm.

Highly  instructive  for  the  imprisonment  of  the  time ,

most topically created by Hogarth in 1729 though not published in print as he as a beginner did not find a publisher. Cook’s version present here therefore supposedly the earliest representation in print and included in the complete edition of Hogarth’s works. Here in the impression from the plate reworked by the royal engraver James Heath (1757 London 1834) about 1822 (“Even these impressions became relatively rare today though”, Art Gallery Esslingen 1970; and Meyers Konv.-Lex., 4th ed., VIII [1888], 625: “A fine edition”) on buff paper. – Minimal foxing spots in three margins.
