“ I  see  by  this  woman’s  features

that  she  is  capable  of  any  wickedness ”

Hogarth, William (1697 London 1764). Sarah Malcolm. The charwoman who killed three at once in three-quarter figure, sitting at a table, three days before her hanging. Between crime and penance a judging justice had set but 1 month. Engraving by Thomas Cook (c. 1744 – London 1818). Inscribed: W. Hogarth (ad Vivum) pinxit. / Engrav’d by T. Cook / London Published by G. & J. Robinson Pater noster Row April 1st. 1802., otherwise as above. 22.6 x 22.7 cm.

William Hogarth, Sarah Malcolm (Cook)

Very fine impression of fine chiaroscuro on buff wide-margined paper. Above trimmed within the wide platemark. – Cook “made a name for himself as Hogarth engraver, too, whose complete work he has engraved in copy” (Thieme-Becker) and whose original format he maintained contrary to all later Hogarth editions in his first, earlier edition. For some sheets not published by Hogarth himself Cook became their first engraver, just as he also gained approval of a contemporary connoisseur as Maximilian Speck von Sternburg.

– – – The same in Hogarth’s own etching in a harmonic, wide-margined impression from the plate reworked by the royal engraver James Heath (1757 London 1834) about 1822 (“Even these impressions became relatively rare today though”, Art Gallery Esslingen 1970; and Meyers Konv.-Lex., 4th ed., VIII [1888], 625: “A fine edition”). (1733.) Inscribed: W. Hogarth (ad Vivum) pinxit., otherwise as above. 22.8 x 22.8 cm.
