Howitt, Samuel (1765 – Somers Town 1822)? Chasse de l’Éléphant. (Probably identical withn Hindoo Elephant Trap.) Largely bound elephant let out of the wooden kraal. In front of it three already tamed ones as well as figurines. Aquatint in its original coloring. Ca. 1813. Inscribed: No. 16. / Chasse de l'Éléphant. 18.7 x 23 cm.
(Probably Tooley 224, 1 and 225, 69 resp.) – (FOREIGN FIELD SPORTS.) – Impression for a French edition not provable here without (before?) all other letters, but whose numbering – contrary to another analogous case – corresponds neither with that mentioned by Tooley 224 for the English 1st edition published and completed by Orme in London in 1814 nor with that of the 1819 2nd edition, T. 225, both being unnumbered in contrast to the one here. – Schwerdt I (1928), 177 ff.: “The coloured plates … are fine, both as regards draughtsmanship and colouring … (The book) is sure to increase in value … “.
