Adam Frans van der Meulen, Préparativ de la chasse

Atmospheric  sheet

with royal privilege on heavy laid paper with watermark Great crowned Double Eagle, similar to Briquet 942, and white margins up to 9.5 cm wide.

Bauduins’ “leaves … are etched in a free style and of good effect” Nagler judges generally. Those after his teacher van der Meulen worked from an especially intimate knowledge of the work.

Van der Meulen himself founded his fame in the employ of The Sun King to whom Colbert had called him. He

“ … just arrived at Paris at that time when Louis XIV marched to the Low Countries and the artist had to accompany him to depict the victories of the king. He painted … all lucky successes by the king, all this in an own scenic manner ”

(Nagler).

Watelet brings the latter up, too, by stressing “the easiness of the foliage, the freshness of the landscape, and the lucky distribution of the masses”. And Bauduins’ leaves reflect this charm.
