Confession, The. Reverend in the confessional behind curtain folded back, before of it two women, one praying, the other confessing. Right of that on a pew beneath the sarcophagus of pope Paul II a wanderer or herdsman telling one’s beads sorrowfully, next to him woman with child. Wood engraving after a watercolor by Ludwig Passini (Vienna 1832 – Venice 1903) at A. Closs in Stuttgart. (1876.) Inscribed: L. Passini 1870, otherwise in German as before. 12.3 x 17.8 cm.
Comp. Boetticher 21: “A painting ‘The Confession’ was on the 1891 Stuttgart International Art Exposition”. Concentrated on the Italian, namely Venetian genre Passini’s watercolors form “a long line of works awaited always eagerly” (Boett.). – Continuous Rome text on both sides.
