Mieris, Fortuneteller

Mieris, Frans van (1635 Leiden 1681). The Fortuneteller. Elegant young woman, holding a letter in her hand and having the future told to her. According to the dreamy look of her this should be lovely. On the table a lute. Steel engraving by Albert Henry Payne (London 1812 – Leipsic 1902). C. 1840. Inscribed: Fr. v. Mieris pinxt. / A. H. Payne sc., otherwise in English-German as above. 7⅛ × 5⅛ in (18 × 13 cm).

Rarer  sujet . – Obviously with reference to the letter today the painting from 1671 figures as The Love Message in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, while Naumann 87 (1981) sees in the sujet A Woman and a Procuress (Bathsheba):

“ A number of Dutch paintings featur(e) the lute as a kind of moral symbol. Though moral symbol of WHAT sometimes needs further decoding, since many of them seem to be set in brothels where the lute appears to stand for sensuality and specifically female sensuality.

However, equally often, the lute represents domestic harmony or, more prosaically, well-ordered scenes of domestic music making … ”
