Mieris, Frans van (1635 Leiden 1681). (Mieris’ Study.) Sitting at the easel and talking with the lady in a white satin gown whose portrait he has almost completed. In the background a servant. In front left at the wall a cello. The picture discloses under a raised curtain as the symbol of the secret and transitory. For the latter, too, on a board skull and loose papers hanging over the edge. Steel engraving by William French (c. 1815 – East Grinstead 1898). 3rd quarter of the 19th century. Inscribed: Fr. v. Mieris pinxt. / W. French sc., otherwise in German as above. 19 x 12.9 cm. – Top rounded.
