“ In general, the stone which is hewn for the edifices in China, is cut remarkably thin in proportion to its length, being perhaps only half a foot in thickness, though it be two or three feet in width, and six in length. Many of the smaller bridges are made of such stones, laid like planks, on piers. This figure is working with a pointed chisel, and a little iron-headed mallet. His screen prevents the chippings from giving annoyance to any one passing by him. ”
