Rogier van der Weyden, Saint Katharine

Weyden, Rogier van der (de le Pasture, Tournai about 1398/1400 – Brussels 1464). Saint Katharine. With the sword in her hand, the crown and part of the broken wheel lying on the ground. On the path down the valley halting rider as supposedly the rejected suitor Emperor Maxentius. View over gardens and a river valley with castle. Steel engraving by William French (c. 1815 – East Grinstead 1898). 3rd quarter of the 19th century. Inscribed: Belvedere. / Rogier van der Weyden pt. / W. French sc., otherwise in German + English as above. 18.6 x 10.2 cm.

After the only slightly larger panel from about 1430-32 in the Royal Gallery in Vienna joint as diptych with the Standing Mary with the Child in a Niche as its assumed original front, separated later (de Vos 3).

“ The smooth drapery of the cloths lacks the later clear contour. This hints at an early date of creation what is corroborated by conformity with other early works … The landscape, however, corresponds already perfectly with the more mature style of the Miraflores Altar and the Braque Triptych. Besides an influence by van Eyck shows in the microscopically fine pictorial spatiality and luminosity that once more supports the early date of creation ”

(Dirk de Vos, Rogier van der Weyden, 1999, pp. 179 ff.).
