Osterwalder, Dictionnaire des Illustrateurs, p. 622. – Plate 18 of Le Petit’s Fleurs, Fruits & Légumes du Jour. – With the address of L’Éclipse and that of the printer Coulbœuf, both Paris. – On the back and particularly on the left and below in the white margin a little foxed, but unessential. – With H. Briollet’s quatrain:
« Le haricot rouge est bruyant: / Ce simple fait est authentique, / Mais il ne sort pas que du vent / De ce vieux mets démocratique. »
Schœlcher (1804-1893), republican politician and barricade fighter of 1851, interceded particularly for the the abolition of slavery in the French colonies in the Carribean. Emigrated to England during the second empire he also wrote a valued biography on Handel (London 1857). Since 1875 member of the senate for life.
