“ … to the Academy Dusseldorf (under Mücke, K. Sohn, Schadow, and F. Th. Hildebrandt) and with R. Jordan there (1856/60). 1863/65 active in the Valais, went 1865 to Dusseldorf again, returned 1866 … to his home region. Painted chiefly scenes from Valais folk life with landscape setting. Received the nickname: The ‘Alpen-Raphael’”
