"1860-70 costume draughtsman at the theatre in Weimar and teacher for costume knowledge at the grand-ducal Academy of the Arts there. Since 1870 professorship in Berlin. – Decorative mural paintings for private houses and paintings with historic, mythological scenes, genre pictures, but foremost costume drawings. 1876 he designed 500 drawings for Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungs, taking pains for historical accuracy what was against Wagner's intentions, and participated in the staging of the first Festival in Bayreuth" (Allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon XXVIII, 2001, 238).
