Thieme-Becker XIII, 263 f. + XXXIV, 335. – One of just 23 etchings after Gauermann in additionally rare impression before the letter and standing for Gauermann’s creative beginning as he did not like “anymore to paint just the view enlivened by ‘accessories’ … but the living detail of nature in which landscape, man, and animal blend into the homogeneous whole of nature . Already a landscape of 1823 animated with livestock in front shows how G. tried to inspire the form of the old Netherlandish masters with new life. As pioneer of the Vienna landscape naturalism he made himself a name … in 1826”. – Small watermark. – Two small marginal tears backed.
