“ Boulders , Waterfall ,
a Crying Rutting Stag ”
Ridinger, Johann Elias (Ulm 1698 – Augsburg 1767). Un Cerf de dix cors jeunement de montagne, qui cherche à ruter et réer en cherchant dés bêtes. A Fair Mountain Stag of 10 points, as such goes after the deer with cries. In picturesque landscape broad to the right. Etching and engraving. (1736.) Inscribed: 5. / Cum Priv. Sac. Cæs. Majest. / I. El. Ridinger inv. pinx. Sculps. et excud. Aug. Vind, otherwise as above in German, French, Latin, & below. 34.4 x 43.8 cm.

Thienemann + Schwarz 200. – Sheet 5 of the STUDY OF THE WILD ANIMALS with the subtext of the Hamburg pope of poets, jurist & senator, foremost, however, friend of Ridinger’s, Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747), in German. – Margins 3-4 cm wide. – The utterly smoothed centerfold reinforced on the back. The edge on the back with trace of old adhesive tape.
“ … full of inner ardor , full of rutting desire if he could not feel deer anywhere … and us who can see in our room , now through Rid ...... , effortless without climbing , brings us easily onto the scent of the original presented here , the real nature . As unfortunately we have become blind by habit for the original , the creatures , he tries to raise us from the habitual sleep by drawing . Thus I see his art , himself indeed , as a tool … ”
And not least and by chance already in 1901 Ernst Welisch qualified Ridinger as the indisputably “most important Augsburg landscapist of this time”. Here then
of shining-marvelous quality & therefore rarity ,
for even in exemplary old Ridinger collections the old impressions of particularly this so fine large-sized main set frequently figure as closely trimmed, damaged, and fully mounted. So present sheet 1889 with Coppenrath at least without platemark, while Reich auf Biehla (1894) could obtain it only in the new impression of about 1850, and it was utterly denied to the Silesian collection 1885 at Boerner. In such a manner here then of downright raised rarity .
