Johann Elias Ridinger, A Stag of 6 points

Thienemann + Schwarz 198. – Sheet 3 of the STUDY OF THE WILD ANIMALS with the subtext of the Hamburg pope of poets, jurist & senator, foremost, however, friend of Ridinger’s, Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747), in German. – With WANGEN watermark as so characteristic for contemp. impressions. – The utterly smoothed centerfold reinforced on the back. – Margins on three sides 4-4.8, above 2.3 cm wide. – Tiny thin paper spot below the hind legs.

Cf.  the  similar  sceneries  of  Th. 315  of  the  Wondrous Stags , the 22-points stag of 1721 of the elector of Trier, Franz Ludwig of Palatinate-Neuburg, + Th. 438.

“ He flees and remains on one spot . This now is no magic ; But it is a black art . So that here is visible lastingly , what otherwise speed would carry off … I immerse myself with quiet pleasure in the thick fields , and if I can and still can’t take my eyes off the fine forest , for one always feels new beauty ; so I cry : Everyone must confess , that here the creative nature creates herself by Rid....... .”

In short, not by chance already in 1901 Ernst Welisch qualified Ridinger as the  indisputably  “most  important  Augsburg  landscapist  of this time”. Here then

of  shining-marvelous  quality  &  therefore  rarity ,

for even in exemplary old Ridinger collections the old impressions of particularly this so fine large-sized main set frequently figure as closely trimmed, damaged, and fully mounted. So including present one in the Silesian collection 1885 at Boerner, 1894 with Reich auf Biehla & at least without platemark also 1889 with Coppenrath.
