Recte supposedly the Jaguar (“… as one not yet knew to distinguish properly between leopards and tigers”, B. Vignier 1676) in a couple with two sucking cubs in rock ambience. Etching and engraving. Thienemann + Schwarz 233. – Sheet 38 of the STUDY OF THE WILD ANIMALS with the subtext of the Hamburg pope of poets, jurist & senator, foremost, however, friend of Ridinger’s, Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747), in German. – Figurative and faint typographic watermarks. – In the left margin two parallel pricks each from previous loose stitching of installments.

“ Even though Ridinger pronounces leopard and tiger as identical in pl. 34. he nevertheless represents here again a large kind of cats which he … calls tiger … (yet) it rather seems to  be  the  jaguar  … ” (Th.). And Brockes:

“ The dreadful=beautiful tiger=animals , can inspire delight=at the same time also terror . Their fine skin tempts us , yet a vicious scowl … drives even the most courageous back. Admire you who sees this , how far here art extends , as one discovers in few dark lines , the tiger=spirit in the eye … How terrible these animals now , how furious the rage , how great the strength … God has subjected them to us still , man knows to master them nonetheless . What cannot the tiger=hides , by treatment be profitable for us ! They serve us for ornament and splendor , they can protect us from cold … ”

of  shining-marvelous  quality  &  therefore  rarity ,

for even in exemplary old Ridinger collections the old impressions of particularly this so fine large-sized main set frequently figure as closely trimmed, damaged, and fully mounted. So including present one in the rich Silesian collection 1885 at Boerner and at least without platemark also 1889 with Coppenrath or one even could get hold of the sheets as new impressions of about 1850 only as including present one 1894 with Reich auf Biehla.
