Thienemann + Schwarz 223. – Sheet 28 of the STUDY OF THE WILD ANIMALS with the caption of the Hamburg pope of poets, jurist & senator, yet foremost friend of Ridinger’s, Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747), in German. – The beautiful sheet in

splendidly  fine , warm-toned  impression

with fine little margins all around. – Quite feeble brown spot in the outermost corner of the white margin below right.

“ Who would not admire the cave ! Who would not delight his sight at the underground landscape of frightful beauty ! … Look how lively everything is ! Look how the otter couple eats fish so naturally ! … how this animal , for its nourishment , is formed quite admirably … Head and tail and hide and claws let see a wise provision a wise ultimate object. if one now often perceives damage in the dykes ; so yet , by fine hides , often the loss is replaced … Yes it shall lessen the vertigo and , a stocking from otter hide , soothe podagra aches … ”

And not least and by chance already in 1901 Ernst Welisch qualified Ridinger as the  indisputably  “most  important  Augsburg  landscapist  of this time”.

“ I am curious as to the history of this (original Ridinger printing) plate (I just bought) and the others you have offered. Did you purchase them from the Ridinger estate (indirectly, indeed) or a private collector? These are truly rare one of a kind pieces ”
