Johann Elias Ridinger, Rutting Stags near Neuburg/Danube

(Joh. El. Ridinger’s Hunting Album) II/25. – Comp. Thienemann 271 – Ridinger’s original copper-printing-plate available here! – and see the color illustration of a previous copy here in Blüchel, Die Jagd, II, 111, but also the title ills. of Moser’s “Forstgeschichte Deutschlands”, vol. I, 1794 (Lindner 11.1455.01). – From the “(Album of Interesting Hunt and Group Pictures)” carried as 2nd part. – The whole rare set almost unknown to literature and comprising 80 sheets plus a recently discovered illustrated title of far larger image size (47.5 x 36 cm), though practically to be completed just peu à peu. In the pictorial effect the works correspond to the manner of aquatint not used by Ridinger anymore. – On strong, wide-margined paper.

The as charming as pictorially beautiful sujet of sheet 29 of the “Wondrous Stags” qualified as rare already in 1908 on occasion of the dissolution of the collection A. W. Schultze in Hamburg – Boerner XCIII, 773 – that due to its deviation in size and design “does not seem to belong to this collection” (Thienemann) and had been sold in a new edition of 1825 together with the pendants Th. 269 + 270 “as special small set under the title ‘Rutting Stags’”. Here then slightly differing from the etching without the high road cross there. Especially thanks to this certain independence a

first  degree  collection  enrichment .

“ Subject: Thanks!

Thanks for your kind reply. I wanted to comment that your thoughts on freedom (the quote that you had on the end of your message to me) are exactly the same as my beliefs.

I write, however, because I was surprised to get it from Europe … Although an American, almost all my early family were Huguenots … In fact, my relative, Jan C. is noted as the earliest C. to have arrived in N. America (in 1636, I think) … ”
