Bologna. Market Place (Piazza Maggiore, later Piazza Vittorio Emanuele) with Neptune Fountain. Amidst of rich market bustle the famous fountain of Tommaso Laurenti completed 1566 with Giovanni Bologna’s statue of Neptune. Toned wood engraving by Richard Berthold (Reudnitz near Leipsic 1854 – Leipsic 1914) after Theodor Alexander Weber (Leipsic 1838 – Paris 1907) for Adolf Closs, Stuttgart. (1876.) Inscribed: within the subject A Closs X. I. Berthold, otherwise typographically in German as above. 19.8 x 24.6 cm.

Receiving his graduation as woodcutter in the leading Closs studio already in 1879 Berthold was appointed professorship for woodcut at the Royal Academy for Graphic Arts + Book-Trade in Leipsic, where he developed especially the tone cut technique. “ … in the reproduction cuts (he developed)
