Lübeck – (Shipper’s House, In the.) The guests at drinking. Wood engraving after Joh. Gehrts (St. Pauli/Hamburg 1855 – Dusseldorf 1921) for Adolf Closs (1840 Stuttgart 1894, “at his time one of the best of his profession in Germany”, Thieme-Becker). (1880/81.) 18 x 23.5 cm. Discovering previously overlooked places + details and making them available for prints was the order of the young and even still cheap artists sent out (quite in the sense of Lee A. Iacocca’s Chrysler motto: We wanted open minds not poisoned by Detroit) and formed the success of the wood engraving. See on this i. a. Hanebutt-Benz, Studien zum dt. Holzstich im 19. Jhdt., Frankfort/Main 1984, + Linton, Master of Woodengraving, NH 1989.
