Elbing / Westprussia – Elbing Lowland seen from the Thumberg, The. Lateral right a locality (Bollwerk?). Wood engraving by Adolf Closs (1840 Stuttgart 1894, “at that time one of the best [wood engravers] in Germany“, Thieme-Becker) after Gustav Schönleber (Bietigheim 1851 – Karlsruhe 1917). (1880/81.) Inscribed: GS / A. Closs sc, otherwise in German as before. 6.8 x 18.8 cm. BACK: The Fresh Spit of Land near Kahlberg. Wood engraving after the same, but without engraver signature. 8.2 x 18.7 cm. – Continuous text “(Elbing and the Fresh Spit of Land)” on both sides. – Ad I: One of the rarer works engraved by Closs himself; the studio works predominate.
