of shining-marvelous quality & therefore rarity ,

for even in exemplary old Ridinger collections the old impressions of particularly this so fine large-sized main set frequently figure as closely trimmed, damaged, and fully mounted. – Margins on three sides 2.4-3.2, on the right 4.5 cm wide. – Slight box pleat in the center of the subject hardly perceptible anymore. In the white lower margin backed tear of 2 cm.

Oil on canvas after Georg Adam Eger (1727 Murrhardt 1808). Inscribed in German with the brush: Seyfert / Metz 1804 (lower right in light brown) & One such Main Boar / 6. feet long. 3 ft. 7. inch clear high / has been catched alive in the so-called Koberstatt a’rheilger Forest / the 4th of December 1765. and By the / Sr. Landgrave at Darmstatt. The qualitatively very fine work


Seyfert, The Darmstadt Tusker of 1765

immediate copy after Eger’s lost painting

in Eger’s palette .

Seyfert’s silvery blue for the wholesale tree scenery not worked in such a manner in Heinrich Philipp Bossler’s (Darmstadt 1744 – Leipsic 1812) etching along with the adjacent mountain range missing with the latter, yet that typical for Eger just as his beige-colored reddish sky, is Eger’s very own intention. Here used for the event-adequate

atmospheric mise-en-scène of a winter day drawing to an end

as then such scenery , particularly with an unparalleled wild boar ,

represents a rarity in Eger’s œuvre .

Compared with the captions placed in the upper part of the pictures with Eger in the comparable reproductions with Kölsch its more reserved arrangement lower left with Seyfert is more pleasant at any rate.

Introduced 1924 by Bénézit’s Dictionnaire des Peintres into general literature with i. a. landscapes, Seyfert is ascertained for Metz in 1789 and 1802 ff. In the museum there the portrait of François of Lorraine, Duke of Guise (catalog 1891, no. 71).

The painting honeycombed with rich craquelure

decidedly fine , of subdued luster

and very good preservation on the original stretcher .

On its joining ledges as written sticker of aforementioned early French prepossessor the indecipherably signed, otherwise well legible text on Seyfert’s biography with the remark of

having discovered the painting in Belgium 1830 and still owned it in 1879

when in April he undertook a journey to Metz. By this also on further sticker immediately on the canvas the French translation of the caption. His knowledge of the painter’s life evidently going beyond Bénézit/Thieme-Becker.

The artistically as in regard of age and preservation – only entirely ignorable small rubs and occasional minimal traces of cracking – amazingly perfect historicism framing downright amounting to a collection piece sui generis, documenting without words

what great esteem Seyfert’s Eger copy

of the Darmstadt tusker of 1765 enjoyed at the time of just this its final first framing.

Rare Wintter — A Winter for Wolves

Wintter, Joseph Georg (1751 Munich 1789). The Stag of Odd 20 Points attacked by Wolves. In mountainous winter landscape with fence and set back farm one of the two wolves has grasped the stag by the throat while the half covered other one operates from behind. Etching. As then also Weigel attested the early consummate 1857 on occasion of the here otherwise not provable 137-sheet complete edition per lot 21336 of his art stock catalog:

“ Most sheets very rare .”

His “etchings – so Nagler 1851 in the Künstler-Lexicon – are excellent and are in the treatment between those by Hollar and Riedinger”. To eventually emphasize 1863 once again expressly in the Dictionary of Monogramists (III, no. 68) the rarity of these beautiful sheets. Besides

present one of compositionally quite peculiar inherent charm .

And in such a manner , yet also thematically , without example with Ridinger. A trove in the œuvre.

Cornelis van Noorde, Ice Amusement

… and the Ice Amusement petering out in the depth

Noorde, Cornelis van (1731 Haarlem 1795). Ice Amusement. Frozen stretch of water lined with buildings on both sides with subtly designed parish with domineering slender high steeple front left, while front right on an embattled high jetty – conceivable as separation of two tributaries conjoining here – an inn sets the tone, from whose wide-open stable gate a horse looks out, while on the other end a two-mast boat has moored, just as further high-masted boats on the left bank, too. However, the row of houses leading towards the depth just delicately indicated. On the ice besides appreciative manifold fun occupation with, i. a., one-horse sled with gentleman and two ladies whose little dog attempts to encourage the horse to the same leaps. The masses, however, are drawn, tapering off, in single file to the refreshment tent raised in the deep center. Watercolored pen-and-ink drawing. Inscribed below left: CVN . 6 × 9½ in (154 × 241 mm).

Carefully executed sheet-filling work

with still fine(st) margin around the edge line and the complete round watermark below crown Heawood 3149 (Engl. [Bucks?], c. 4¾-4⅞ × 3¾ in [12-12.5 × 9.5 cm]).

Of practically unimpaired preservation. A dark discoloration in the right upper corner of the image (¾ × 1½ in [2 × 3.7 cm]) only scarcely perceptible as not belonging to showing through from the back and besides interrupted by the inn’s chimney with besides pinhead-small thin spot. A small paper fineness at the gable of the house at the left edge of the image.

Generously composed winter day of rich atmosphere

of bright, although certainly interspersed with flurries of snow, weather in the style of Jan van Goyen (Leiden 1586 – The Hague 1656), of whose drinking tents (Beck, Paintings, 55, 71 f., 77 f. et al.) as indispensable ice attraction then present one reminds of at first sight. Correspondingly already Sliggers, s. a., summarizing:

“ (For one artist Van Noorde distinctly had a weakness: Jan van Goyen

whose style of drawing he knew to imitate masterly

… literal copies are … not known, however a number of drawings in black chalk in the style of Van Goyen, often washed brown or grey, also substantially 17th century.) ”

Thienemann & Schwarz 1083. – IN  THE  RIDINGERS’  ORIGINAL  COLORING  from the unnumbered Colored Animal Kingdom created since 1754 and concluded finally posthumously not before 1773 (“Complete copies are next to untraceable”, so Weigel, Art Cat., part XXVIII, Ridinger Appendix 63a as merely 120-sheet torso, 1857 ! , but also just individual plates quite rarely on the market only, at niemeyer’s presently nevertheless the one as the others). – Remaining uncolored contrary to the prospectus, a second edition from the plates shortened even under loss of animals and with modified titling and the Ridinger inscription removed, yet now numbered, was published by Engelbrecht/Herzberg in Augsburg 1824/25.

The atmospheric picture contemporarily (1891) documented by literature ,

donated by Dahl 1882 for the raffle of the Albert Society (Red Cross) founded in 1867 by Carola von Sachsen, wife of the Saxon king Albert von Wettin (1833-1907, daughter of the Austrian field-marshal prince Gustav Adolf von Wasa & the princess Luise von Baden), first of all especially for the wounded of the 1866 war.

Already at the age of 37 honorary member of the Dresden Academy, Dahl was pupil of his father, Johann Christian Clausen Dahl, the animal painter Joh. Frdr. Wilhelm Wegener, and 1843/45 of the Dresden Academy. “In 1851 he visited London attracted by Edwin Landseer, repeatedly Paris and especially Norway, the native country of the father, what stimulated himself to several compositions, too” (Boetticher 1891).

“ D. is above all an animal painter, his Norwegian and German landscapes already technically not coming up to the

excellent depictions from the life of the dogs , horses , roes , birds .

These genre scenes could stand comparison with those of Edwin Landseer in respect of the loving observations …

they even surpass those in color charm .

A not to be underestimated influence in this connection D. has excerted on an elder art companion, the ingenious Ferd. v. Rayski, with whom he annually made natural studies on the properties of their friends ”

The high-grade panel with the mark of quality “Tachet brevete à Paris” pieced on by Dahl 4.5 cm all-round as not unusual as mark of creative progress during the work and outspokenly exemplarily known of Rubens. So then also inscribed on the lower/upper separate part only. However with the geared consequence of formation of cracks in the seams, visible also on the image-side, as a result of the working wood. Other fine cracks in the lower part of the flowsheet itself unobtrusively on the surface. The state of the painting decidedly good, the yellowed old varnish took away under partly recess of the signature.
