“Famous (royal) copper engraver … who early gained approval” (Nagler VI [1838], 23). About 1822 he retouched the plates of Hogarth’s engraved œuvre. “Even these impressions have become relatively rare today though”, so Art Gallery Esslingen 1970, and Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, 4th ed., VIII [1888], 625: “A fine edition”, esteemed also already by contemporary collectors of the rank of for instance an A. T. Stewart (Catalog of the Stewart Collection, New York 1887, 1221, “fine plates”). As than also a purchaser of such a one here, in possession of contemporary impressions, too, mailed: “great joy, I’m very pleased with it”.
