Eugen Krüger, Rabbit Hunt

Krüger, Eugen (Altona/Hamburg 1832 – Düsternbrook/Kiel 1876). Rabbit Hunt with the ferret. One is catched by the assistant when leaving the earth while others are caught in nets or already laid to the bag besides the pickaxe. Meanwhile the hunter reloads. On the left the cage for the ferrets. Chalk lithograph printed with beige tone plate for Boyes & Geisler in Hamburg. (1861-62.) Inscribed: Gez. u. lith. v. E. Krüger, caption in German as before. 10¼ × 12⅜ in (26.1 × 31.5 cm).

From the 22-sheet album Die Jagd gezeichnet und lithographiert von Eugen Krüger (Souhart 275) published in 7 (!) installments. – With the printer’s address “Druck d. lith. Inst. v. Chs. Fuchs, Hambg.”. – On light cardboard. – On the back foxing though not affecting the image.

Not in Schwerdt! – Boetticher I/2 (1895), 808 f., Rump (1912; new ed. 1980 and, enlarged, 2005 & 2013) & Thieme-Becker XXI (1927), 593 (bibliographically mixing with the one here with besides erroneous dates “1860” and “2nd ed. 1865”) each with but the autonomous set Wild und Wald of likewise 22 lithographs published 1866/67 by Otto Meissner in Hamburg.

As a whole the in such a way largely unknown, painterly suite – “was the first in Hamburg to produce color lithographs” (Th.-B., at the same time emphasizing Krüger’s “painterly technique close to Ruths and Geißler”) – is

of the greatest rarity.

Krüger, “landscape and animal painter, also lithographer … learned lithography in Altona and in Vienna, before he turned to landscape painting … settled (after travels and studies in Dusseldorf) in Hamburg where he started his album on hunting ‘Wild und Wald’, that, completed in 1867, was honored with the Prussian Medal of the Arts”. His travels led him throughout Europe, his early death caused his work being small and thus desired. “An ‘Eugen Krüger (Memorial) Exhibition’ with works mostly in private collections … took place in Hamburg in early 1877” (Boetticher).
