ADB XXVIII, 282 f. – Settled library stamp on title, written owner’s note on fly-leaf. – Few leaves foxing. Corners of the boards and the back at the joints and heads rubbed, otherwise fine fresh copy in the nice publisher’s binding for several titles of this kind.

Johann Adam Reum (Altenbreitungen 1780 – Tharandt 1839) was collaborator of the famous Cotta at Tharandt since 1811, since 1816 in a chair.

“ Reum was a richly talented, sharp-witted and utterly inspiring teacher. His teaching method was not directed at exclusive education, but at instruction … for independent thinking … Finally his indefatigable activity with reference to the botanical garden at Tharand requires laudable mention … ”

His present work was published first in 1814 as “Compendium of German Forestry Botany” and its 3rd edition was translated into French, too. “The purely scientific part of this work, which for a long time was in excellent repute, misses the desirable deepening though; the descriptive part, however,

surpasses  all  earlier  forestry-botany  papers . ”

Subdivided in General Forestry Botany – Of the Kinds of Wood – Of the Forest Herbs . The latter division first published as independent work in 1819, to be then included with the Forestry Botany “essentially revised and enlarged”.
