Under the Eye of God in the Triangle
Leopold I, Emperor, jointly with the 7 Electors, the former wreathed with laurel and with scepter and Order of the Golden Fleece, below richly draped gallery with the Austrian Double Eagle
– between the heads of them the eye of God in the triangle
as the symbol of the freemasons –
with imperial crown and coat of arms as centerpiece, flanked by two eagles with fruit garland with six (sic!) arms hooked into. In the lower base field dominant raging battle between Empire and Turkish crescent, enclosed by two medals with eagle, the left of which with palm leaf in the claws, with inscription FULMINA PORTO IOVIS and SIC AD SUBLIMIA TENDO resp. The whole as imposing frame sui generis to the title plate “The English Atlas / Volume II / Tome I”, below “ANNO 1681”. Engraving. 16 × 10⅜ in (40.7 × 26.5 cm).
The splendid title sheet to the partial volume of the 2-vols. Janssonius-Waesberghe Atlas (“English Atlas”) of 1680/81 at Moses Pitt + Stefan Swart in London, whose title plate is mounted on white underground after presumed erasure of the original title. Margins 4-7.8 cm wide, only on the left with 1.5-2 cm lesser, otherwise perfect.
Standing behind of the emperor sitting on the left the three ecclesiastical electors of Mayence, Treves, Cologne, the former as arch-chancellor of the empire with the raised sword in his right. Opposite to them the four worldly representatives, the two of them in front sitting. Significant the battle with the Turks commanding the lower centerfield (2 × 4⅛ in [5 × 10.5 cm]) as emanation of the
menace to the West by the Porte
lasting since 1591 and that even more so as the so-called Great Turkish War (1683-1699) with its 7-weeks siege of Vienna as a lasting shock wave still was to come at the time of the present engraving. Here available in this connection both the large equestrian portrait of immortal Prince Eugene by the great Rugendas and also a Brandenburg-Ansbach Turk hunting toil of 1700, the latter as psychologically important evidence of human thinking in the Baroque.
That is based upon the simple transference of own dreads onto the game which culture-historically is the more remarkable as only in 1715 with Malebranche that last Cartesian relict passed away that attributed to the animal just a “purely robotlike machine existence” (Ernst von Aster).
