Christian Lebrecht Vogel, The Brothers

Vogel, Christian Lebrecht (1759 Dresden 1816). The Brothers. The two sons of the artist – one the later Royal Saxon Court Painter Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein – sitting in a niche of the house and reading in a picture-spelling-book. Steel engraving by William French (c. 1815 – East Grinstead 1898). Inscribed: Dresdener Galerie. / C. L. Vogel pinxt. / W. French sc., otherwise in German-English as above. 6 × 6⅝ in (15.1 × 16.8 cm).

Vogel’s presumably most famous painting, worked during the years in Wildenfels whereto he was appointed by Count Solms in 1780. Painted in several versions the one here most likely engraved after the latest which the King of Saxony purchased for the Gallery in Dresden.
