Bilberries !! — A Rare Cry
Smith, John Thomas (1766 London 1833). Bilberries. Young woman in waisted coat, medium laced boots and cap adorned by bilberries, the basket with the bilberries in the left and the measure in the right, walking on looking for customers. Etching. Inscribed: 25. / TS (ligated) 1819, otherwise as above. 7½ × 4½ in (19 × 11.5 cm).

Come onto the London market only in the last quarter of the 18th century mostly from Hertfordshire bilberries soon enjoyed great demand and also medical recommendation. However, as cry they remained scarce. – On Smith see Nagler XVI, 529 f. + Thieme-Becker XXXI, 174. – On three sides at the far edges of the wide white margin quite light touch of barely worth mentioning feeble foxing.
