Hofstätter Rw 49; Weixlgärtner 49, V. – Published per annual portfolio 1906 by the Society for Reproducing Art in Vienna as internationally focussed spearhead for the experiments of the artists of Symbolism, Expressionism, and the Secession. – On light cardboard. – Marginal tear repaired. Specially the wide white margin foxing, the picture itself touched on the back only. – Hofstätter:

“ One might describe Jettmar (member of the Vienna Secession since 1898, co-worker of Die Jugend and Ver Sacrum) as the opponent of Klimt in Vienna; his contribution to art nouveau is another element … Less economic than by Klimt the line is used: as a thorough web of darknesses out of which landscape and figures crystallize under the influence of important and often hidden sources of light. ”

“ J. chooses in his paintings a vigorous design vocabulary in a symbolistic manner, frequently in a dramatically exaggerated chiaroscuro and oversized proportions … J.’s prints show an overwhelming world of dreams and visions which reminds of that of William Blake, Johann Heinrich Füssli and Gustave Doré … J. belongs to the

most important representatives of European symbolism ”

(B. Palmbach in Allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon, vol. 78 [2013], p. 33).

“ In spring 1893 he hiked on foot … through … Switzerland to the yearned for Italy. The colossal Swiss mountain world … is reflected in his works for a long time … J.s most characteristic printed works, particularly etchings, but also lithographs and woodcuts, are in interest in no way inferior to his paintings ”

(Arpád Weixlgärtner in Thieme-Becker XVIII [1925], 543).
