Four weeks later he tried with the help of the “(Naval) Brigade Ehrhardt” to overthrow the government of the German Reich and to help the New York born conservative East Prussian landscape director general Wolfgang Kapp into power. In 1917 together with Admiral Tirpitz the latter had founded the Patriotic Party.
