Johann Elias Ridinger, White Fallow Deer and the Hind

Thienemann + Schwarz 213; Helbing XXXIV (1900), 440 (“Of outstanding beauty with full margin”). – Sheet 18 of the STUDY OF THE WILD ANIMALS with the caption of the Hamburg pope of poets, jurist & senator, yet foremost friend of Ridinger’s, Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747), in German. – Margins 3-5 cm wide. – The utterly smoothed centerfold reinforced on the back.

“ In the flight of the quick game , my look flies with them … and sees the planks fall , which , the stag breaks through and turns over , together with the light and quick doe , driven by severe dread . Barely I can see the wonders … which in this fine drawing , are not and yet painted … But so much I remember , that , impossible on earth ,

an animal’s quick run , could be shown more alike .

I further recollect … because the art shows us nature , nature the Creator .”

In short, not by chance already in 1901 Ernst Welisch qualified Ridinger as the indisputably “most important Augsburg landscapist of this time”. Here then

of marvelous-shining quality & therefore rarity ,

for even in exemplary old Ridinger collections the old impressions of particularly this so fine large-sized main set frequently figure as closely trimmed, damaged, and fully mounted. So including present one in the Silesian collection 1885 at Boerner & 1894 with Reich auf Biehla, while Coppenrath (1889) could not obtain it at all. Otherwise, however, assenting to Helbing, one of the

terrifically finest Ridingeriana

of a painterly delicacy widening the heart .
