Johann Elias Ridinger, The Par Force Hunt

Ridinger, Johann Elias (Ulm 1698 – Augsburg 1767). La Chasse par force. The Par Force Hunt. “In the foreground of an open wooded landscape … One pack is at the heels of the tired stag … Behind of it plenty hunters at a gallop, the first one blows the horn, the others have drawn the sword to give it the coup-de-grâce. Further behind hunters rest with packs of hounds, horses stand on relay and some riders ride hard about. A vivid picture” (Th.). Etching with engraving. (1729.) Inscribed: I. El. Ridinger inv. pinx. sculps. et exc. A.V. / avec privil. de Sa. Maj. Imperiale., otherwise as above and with German-French didactic text. 13¼ × 16½ in (33.6 ×x 42 cm).

From the unnumbered early 36-sheet Princes’ Pleasure , listed by literature as its 9th sheet. – Watermark Great Fleur-de-lis (Strasbourg?) visible in outline only. – Margins on three sides 3-3.7, on the right 4.7 cm wide. – Small paper injury at the stitching margin above.

“ Such happens with par force hounds, mounted … the stag is driven by the hunt as the principal pleases for a long time and that after the scent, until he finally resigns to the hunter and hounds quite exhaustedly … as then the hounds are called off of the noble stag or taken away, the stag then is dismembered, and the hounds get their right of it, and thus are fed. ”

– not by chance already in 1901 Ernst Welisch qualified Ridinger as the indisputably “most important Augsburg landscapist of this time” –

as in such quality rare of old.
