Ridinger, Johann Elias (Ulm 1698 – Augsburg 1767). Trace of an Otter / Right Fore Leg / Left hind Leg. In wild rock scenery a “Fine cascade, in front of which an otter lurks for prey, therefore moonshine” (Th.). In the water reflection of its head. Below the picture the life size traces detailed a-e. Etching with engraving. (1740.) Inscribed: 16. / Joh. El. Ridinger inv. del. sc. et exc. Aug. Vind., otherwise in German as above & below. 14¾ × 11¾ in (37.6 × 29.7 cm).

a. claws of which there are at the hind and fore leg 5. / b. the little skin so standing in between. / c. the balls at the fore leg. / d. the balls at the hind leg. / e. in soft ground one also sees the hairs at the hind leg.

“ While in the etching the landscape appears unaltered, Ridinger put the otter, not to the advantage, into another position …

That Ridinger has not taken the composition of his sheets easy is illustrated best by (one) variant not engraved in comparison with (present) picture … which has to be considered a preparatory drawing for it. Here, too, we see the same rock landscape, however, on the left moved somewhat towards the background by which the sky becomes visible; between cascade and otter a rock part behind which a cypress-like stock of trees rises out, instead of the left rock here reeds. Unsigned … A comparison (of this variant) with (the eventual preparatory drawing) illustrates Ridinger’s method and his endeavor to a more accentuated composition. ”


Very fine toned, utterly uniformly harmonic impression – yet probably of only late 18th/early 19th century – on strong laid paper. – The half sheet uncut on three sides with margins above & below 7.5-9 cm, laterally 3-3.6 cm wide, each in addition to the wide white platemark, and in such a sheet size of 21¼ × 14½ in (54 × 36.8 cm) comparable to the loose copy of the Schwerdt Collection (vol. III, page 137: “Fine impressions”, sheet size 20¼ × 14⅛ in [51.3 × 36 cm]). – The quite faint touch of age stains on the front perceptible to limited extend in the white margins only. Top right irregularity in the white deckle edge of 1 × ¾ in (2.5 × 2 cm). In the latter also isolated minimal tears backed acid-freely. Otherwise of impeccable freshness and preserved unaltered & unframed.

– – – The same in uniquely beautiful impression with watermark WANGEN as one of the sturdy laid paper qualities preferred by Ridinger. – Margins above & below 3.3-4.7 cm wide, on the left 1.3, on the right 0.7 cm margin resp., each in addition to the wide white platemark. – Upper & lower margin slightly foxstippled, the latter also somewhat agespotted from turning over and the former centrally of the outer edge somewhat fissured-glue-traces from previous binding. – See the complete description.
