Ridinger, Johann Elias (Ulm 1698 – Augsburg 1767). This (Rutting) Stag His Princely Serene Highness Carl Alexander Duke of Wurttemberg has shot himself, In the Year 1735. the 22nd Aug. in the Vorhalden Frickenhauser Huth Kirchheim Forest. Square to the left, the fine head turned backwards. On the left in the back on high peak Hohenneuffen Castle. Etching with engraving. Late 1730s. Inscribed: 13. / Joh. E. Ridinger del. sculpsit et excud. A. V., otherwise in German as above. 14¾ × 11½ in (37.5 × 29.3 cm).
Thienemann (“He bears an excellent set of antlers with heavily jagged palms”) & Schwarz 255. – Sheet 13 of the set of the Wondrous Deer concluded 1768, to which Thienemann records per supplement 1325 a variant supposedly dropped after but few impressions, with, i. a., the stag being kept smaller, the mountain fortress named, yet foremost the Princely Wurttemberg gun cocker Joh. Ernst Wagner named as copy draughtsman, and Ridinger limited himself to his sculpsit. For this original drawing by Wagner to Th. 1325 with Weigel Thienemann (1856) refers to folio 3, n of his listing of drawings (page 276). However, in the 1869 catalog of Ridinger drawings in the estate of the late Weigel the drawing is not present anymore. There per 129 only the one Ridinger did 1735 after Wagner in the same direction as the etching for indeed Th. 1325, now via Ratjen Collection in Washington.
Helbing refers to present sheet Th. 255 per the drawing Stag with Monstrous Antlers in Fine Landscape (cat. XXXIV , Arbeiten von J. E. und M. E. Ridinger, no. 1553).
Very fine impression with typographic watermark. – On the back supposedly old owner’s mark in bistre. – Additionally to the white platemark fine margin around, which is on the right, starting from the white edge of the caption field, faintly age-spotted. Of a very few minimal thin spots only one far left perceptible in the subject.
