Johann Elias Ridinger, This especially Rare TigerThe association had been founded 1858 by Ernst Plassmann (Sondern near Wuppertal 1823 [1822?] – New York City 1877), who become one of the leading sculptors and carvers of his time of the United States after turns at Aix-la-Chapelle, Cologne and Paris. His 2.6 m high 5 tons statue on adequate granite pedestal of Cornelius Vanderbilt, The Commodore, as the longstanding boss of Grand Central Railway was the most monumental bronze bust in the United States of his time, created after Albert de Groot, one of Vanderbilt’s steamship skippers. Inaugurated November 1869, it shows the mogul in Jefferson pose – the right on the chest, the left extended downwards – bareheaded in his characteristic winter clothing. Originally placed as part of a 46-meter pedestal on the genial entrepreneur’s life & work at the freight depot of the Hudson River Railway, 1929 it moved to the south front of Mid Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal to the two of those other cast-iron eagles handed over later to the MTA museum, of which eleven or twelve had adored the Grand Central Station demolished in 1910, thereby separating.

Of particular importance besides one of Gutenberg, too, his colossal clay statue of Benjamin Franklin as printer – the left holds an edition of the Pennsylvania Gazette – from 1870/71 in Printing House Square, New York, inaugurated January 17, 1872. No less spectacular that of Tammany from 1868/69 as the legendary chief of the Delaware as part of the Tammany Hall front at the 14th Street.

Plausibly conceivable then , too , that Plassmann or whomsoever there

acquired present Tiger Horse as well as both the other tigers of the 6-sheet set

nowhere else but the drummer for Ridinger in America ,

Emil Seitz 413 Broadway ,

celebrated by LLOYD’S 1866/67 New York tourist guide as downright institution now passed upon the successors Messrs. Weisman & Langerfeldt, speaking of

“ Emil Seitz, the well-known virtuoso … for years connected with fine art establishments, both in this country and in Europe, and has obtained one of the finest collections of line engravings, etchings, mezzotints, drawing studies, water-color drawings, &c. ever seen on this continent. ”

Having set forth to America only in 1850 and on his demise 1911 enjoying already 25 years retirement, he nonetheless could be certain of an ex cathedra obituary by NEW YORK TIMES. He was the son-in-law of Ferdinand Ebner, since 1821 partner of Herzberg’s art dealer’s shop in Augsburg, which about 1824/25 jointly with the shop of Martin Engelbrecht as owner of a great part of Ridinger’s printing plates produced qualitatively very good reissues of these, although at least largely not on laid paper. – See Did Things in a Big Way — Emil Seitz & Ridinger on the Broadway here.

As an adequate setting for present especially rare Tiger Horse from the stable of the “Horses of Heaven” with their 2000-years origin in the Siberian Altay Mountains in the border region to Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China. By which Altay locality through the times till today mythical desires associate as “far in the east (there were) a country of eternal beauty and wisdom, called Belovodye (white water). Only few, chosen men were granted to find this land … Belovodye. More than a thousand years ago, before Russia adopted the Christian-orthodox faith from Byzantium, 987, it emerges from the night of history. It is said superior beings welcome there those who search for it, a land in which man lives in peace and harmony. Belovodye.”

Belovodye in the Altay Mountains … The voyage to this place of utopian desire starts at Berlin central station. Five days and five nights with the Trans-Siberian Railway … After more than 3,100 miles on the train: the mountains of the Altay … for the ride to the promised land: Belovodye.

Belovodye, the search for the utopian place, is a kind of a pilgrimage. One leaves everything behind and immerges into a world in which nature communicates in a mighty way … ”

Utopia with the tiger horses as a fact .

For much much more noble the former, suddenly disappeared, yet already at the time of Ridinger flourishing again, then great pleasure of in particular American new breeders … Here then from the master’s running series of most wondrous appearances as

zoological case example of science.
