Johann Elias Ridinger, Tigers (recte Jaguar)

Thienemann + Schwarz 233. – Sheet 38 of the STUDY OF THE WILD ANIMALS with the caption of the Hamburg pope of poets, jurist & senator, yet foremost friend of Ridinger’s, Barthold Heinrich Brockes (1680-1747), in German. – Figurative and faint typographic watermarks. – In the left margin two parallel pricks each from previous loose stitching of installments.

“ Even though Ridinger pronounces leopard and tiger as identical in pl. 34. he nevertheless represents here again a large kind of cats which he … calls tiger … (yet) it rather seems to be the jaguar ” (Th.). And Brockes:

“ The dreadful=beautiful tiger=animals , can inspire delight=at the same time also terror . Their fine skin tempts us , yet a vicious scowl … drives even the most courageous back. Admire you who sees this , how far here art extends , as one discovers in few dark lines , the tiger=spirit in the eye … How terrible these animals now , how furious the rage , how great the strength … God has subjected them to us still , man knows to master them nonetheless . What cannot the tiger=hides , by treatment be profitable for us ! They serve us for ornament and splendor , they can protect us from cold … ”
