William Hogarth, Impression from a Silver Tankard

Hogarth catalog of the Tate Gallery of 1971/72, 5. – Showing the also thematically rich engraving of a silver tankard of a club of artists meeting weekly in The Bull’s Head in Clare Market (the latter a meat market) of which Hogarth was a member. For Mr. Ireland the simplicity and elegance of the composition spoke volumes for Hogarth’s taste and skill. – Cook “made his mark as Hogarth engraver, too” (Thieme-Becker); present sujet, however, he has treated supposedly for the first time only in the small edition of the years 1806/09 following his folio edition. – Trimmed within the wide white platemark feebly brown-touched at the edges on three sides.
