Sitting portrait of the Hamburg merchant domiciled in London sealing a letter. With vista of the water with two sailing ships. Engraving by Thomas Cook (c. 1744 – London 1818). Inscribed: Hogarth pinxt. / T. Cook sculpt. / Published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, & Orme, March 1st. 1809., otherwise as above. Subject size 4⅞ × 4 in (12.5 × 10.1 cm).

one of the best portraits Hogarth has produced .
Very intimate with Mr. Porter (d. 1747) the master frequently visited his houses in both Mortlake and London. – Cook “made his mark as Hogarth engraver, too” (Thieme-Becker) and has engraved present portrait instantaneously via a drawing done 1808 from the original for the smaller edition of the years 1806/09 following his folio edition. – Trimmed within the wide white platemark slightly brown-touched in the far parts of three sides.
