Hogarth, William (1697 London 1764). The Lecture (or The Lecture on the Empty Space). Henry Fisher (d. 1761), ordinary for philosophy at Jesus College and 1737-61 Registrar of the University of Oxford, before the learned audience “whose heads need no comment in regard of their expression”. Steel engraving. C. 1840. Inscribed: Die Vorlesung. / The Lecture. 7 × 5¾ in (17.8 × 14.5 cm).

The sarcastic plate – “besides it should … raise special interest in Germany” (Lichtenberg) – for which the vain Fisher even had sat for Hogarth. – Trimmed on the right image borderline.
