“ What was once white is now the opposite ”

Hogarth, William (1697 London 1764). The Discovery (The Spoiled Adventure). Instead of the lady of the house and his heart a gentleman attending the nightly rendezvous finds a negress in the bed and in addition even the husband of the former and two friends of his appear on the scene. Engraving by Ernst Ludwig Riepenhausen (1765 Göttingen 1840, university engraver there). Inscribed: 74 / W. Hogarth pinx. / Rp. sc. just as one line from the Metamorphoses. 6⅝ × 7½ in (16.9 × 19.2 cm).

William Hogarth, The Spoiled Adventure (Riepenhausen)

“ Hogarth and some friends fixed up the boastful womanizer John Highmore (of Drury Lane mutiny fame; fl. 1730s), with a pretty woman whose place in bed was taken by a black prostitute – when Highmore drew back the bed curtains they pounced, and Hogarth circulated a crowning print, The Discovery, among their friends ”

(Jenny Uglow, William Hogarth: A Life and a World [2011], pp. 457 f.).

“ With much effort Highmore (the deceived deceiver) induced Hogarth to destroy his plate after just twelve copies had been printed. However, the sheet was not suppressed completely and an after-engraving preserved the amorous adventure forever ”

(from the caption of a lithograph; see offer no. 7,802 below).

Warm-toned impression on especially strong paper, supposedly about 1850. – The slight foxing on the back at the front just affecting the wide white margins. – Riepenhausen’s engravings after Hogarth (“very estimable”, Nagler) belong to his chief work and not least for being in the original direction they are partly even preferred to Hogarth’s own engravings.
