Hogarth, William (1697 London 1764). Frontispieces (2 on 1 sheet) to Tristram Shandy. For once Corporal Trim reading aloud to a circle of three gentlemen two of which visibly devoted to their long pipes, the front one of them – most highly instructive – just endeavoring to light with the help of a coal tongs (?) making mighty smoke. But untroubled of this the third Sir takes a deep sleep. For the other a baptism scene. Engraving by Thomas Cook (c. 1744 – London 1818). Inscribed: Frontispiece to Tristram Shandy. / A Second Frontispiece to Tristram Shandy. / Hogarth pinxt. / T. Cook sculpt. / Published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, & Orme, Jany. 1st. 1808. Subject size 6 × 7⅛ in (15.4 × 18 cm; image sizes à 5¼ × 3⅛ in [13.2 × 7.8 cm]).
Worked for vol. I and III resp. of Laurence Sterne’s famous comic novel “Tristram Shandy” published in nine parts 1759-66 – Cook “made his mark as Hogarth engraver, too, whose complete work he has engraved in copy” (Thieme-Becker) and whose original format he maintained contrary to all later Hogarth editions in his first, earlier edition. For some sheets not published by Hogarth himself Cook became their first engraver, just as he also gained approval of a contemporary connoisseur as Maximilian Speck von Sternburg. Here present in Cook’s popular later, smaller version, however. – Trimmed within the wide white platemark.
